Gen Z is a category-defining furniture in the sea of liquor cabinets. Traditional wine and liquor cabinets are often rooted in farmhouse aesthetics and layouts that have seen little intentional evolution. This project reimagines the cabinet for a new generation, informed by shifting Gen Z drinking habits—fewer nights out at bars and more intimate gatherings hosted at home.
The design brings elements of the bar experience into the home. A panel-mounted light fixture at the base of the cabinet illuminates upward, casting light through frosted, fluted door panels and transforming the displayed bottles into an artwork that's essentially defined by the user's liquor collection. To preserve this uninterrupted visual effect, the cabinet features a handle-less glass door with a subtle offset protrusion that allows for intuitive finger access while remaining magnetically secured. Affordability was a core design constraint from the outset, especially when targeting the newer generations. Rather than designing freely and reducing quality later, cost, manufacturing, and shipping efficiency were integral to the form development. The cabinet is constructed entirely from straight panel assemblies, resulting in an architectural, almost brutalist expression that avoids curves. This approach simplifies manufacturing, optimizes flat-pack shipping, and enables a MSRP of $149. However, this project is about not an exercise in cost-cutting, but in designing with cost awareness—delivering the highest possible quality and experience within meaningful constraints.
